The China Graduate Mathematical Modeling Competition is an academic competition aimed at graduate students in mathematical modeling research. It is a great platform for graduate students to improve their ability to establish mathematical models and use internet information technology to solve practical problems, as well as to cultivate scientific research innovation and teamwork consciousness. The 17th Huawei Cup China Graduate Mathematical Modeling Competition was held from September 17th to 21st, 2020. The “Knock Oil Fun Team” composed of Dai Qinyang and Zhong Chao from the research group won the second prize of mathematical modeling, with Professor Zhang Kai and Professor Zhang Liming as their instructors.

The selected problem is Problem F, which focuses on changes in the center of mass of the aircraft. The change in the center of mass of the aircraft has an important impact on the control of the aircraft. The distribution of the fuel in each tank and the refueling strategy will cause changes in the center of mass of the aircraft, which in turn affects the control of the aircraft. Therefore, formulating the refueling strategy for each tank is an important task for aircraft control.

The team first gave the curve of the center of mass change for the aircraft during the mission by analyzing the problem, established a control model for the aircraft refueling strategy, considered various constraints, and transformed some discrete constraints into continuous ones. They then used the differential evolution algorithm DE to optimize the control model and obtain the optimal fueling strategy for the aircraft.

This year's competition attracted 17219 teams from 523 universities and research institutes in 34 provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions, special administrative regions, and overseas. Ultimately, 14436 teams and 43308 individuals successfully completed the competition. A total of 188 first prizes, 1926 second prizes, and 2896 third prizes were awarded. The number of registrants and participants reached a historic high, significantly higher than in previous years.
